Working overtime every week may not leave you enough time to get your bachelor’s degree.  With today’s busy schedules, there doesn’t seem to be enough time at the end of the day for too many extra activities beyond work and home life.  That’s why online college is becoming more popular than ever for the increasingly hectic lives people seem to have today. There is much more to learn about free college classes.

Even though some students may need to get their bachelor’s from an online degree program, they might feel that they will miss out on some of the things that make college a special time, like meeting new people or having school spirit.  Maybe they want to develop mentoring relationships with their instructors or have experiences with their classmates.  Being in an online degree program doesn’t necessarily mean having to relinquish all of that.  With a little effort, you can make the most of your online college experience.

Usually, online degree programs have virtual classrooms in which students interact with one another and their professor in a discussion board. Make sure that when an online discussion is scheduled that you log on and participate.  You’ll get to meet your classmates and professor, and start an exchange of ideas that will hopefully last throughout the semester.  If your online class doesn’t have a private chat room, see if one can be set up through the technology department of your online college.  If there is an ability to host a chat room, you can have study groups or idea sessions. Maybe your online college has a tutoring program for students who need it.  If so, consider volunteering to tutor if you are a student who can help.  If the tutoring program has paid positions, you might even make a little money, or you can put the volunteer time down on your resume as community service.

Be sure to stay in touch with your professors.  Even if you are hundreds of miles apart, communication when you are dealing with people is often the key to success.  Ask your professors for feedback on your assignments and papers; they’ll appreciate your willingness to be involved and your ability to use constructive criticism to your advantage.  If it’s at all possible, see about scheduling a face to face meeting once a semester as you work toward your degree.

See if you can have a physical meeting with your classmates during the course of the semester if enough of your classmates live in close proximity to each other.  Get together with your online college classmates to have fun or blow off steam by going to the park, having a softball game or a picnic.  You may see that having personal interaction with the people beyond the modem can help create better online working relationships. Just because you have chosen to go to an online college doesn’t mean that you can’t have an enriching college experience.  By utilizing all of the advantages of your online degree program, you can easily develop bonds with your classmates and professors.  Your online bachelor’s degree can be an education, as well as a great experience.
